Old Navy Helps Encourage School Attendance and an Old Navy $50 Gift Card Giveaway

Did you know that in NYC public schools, approximately one out of every five New York City school students missed one month or more of school last year? Wow! I had no idea they had such a chronic attendance problem. Listen to this creative solution that is sure to make a big difference!

Old Navy has partnered up with Mayor Bloomberg’s Task Force on Truancy and Chronic Absenteeism and has asked NYC Public School students to pledge to go to school every day. In fact, on November 4th, Old Navy rewarded shopping sprees to 300 students with the best and most improved attendance from the 25 schools participating in the Mayor’s Campaign to combat absenteeism with an Old Navy VIP Shopping Experience. These students were given $50 gift cards, along with a surprise winter coat and visit from Mets shortstop, Jose Reyes. Old Navy’s partnership with NYC will continue throughout the school year – with a surprise grand finale at year-end. The first six weeks of the school year have been identified as the most crucial weeks for establishing strong attendance yearlong. This Old Navy program ought to make any kid get to school!

I think it is really neat that Old Navy is partnering with this school district to help this serious problem! Oh! Toys is the home of really special toys. Oh! Toys carries toys that are not widely carried so they are great for getting unique, hard to find gifts. All of the toys I have gotten from Oh! Toys have been really great for encouraging creativity and full engagement of my children's interest in activities such as constructing, playing, and pretending.

The owner of Oh! Toys, discovered the Swiss toy Cuboro in a gift store about 13 years ago and it actually changed his life! He says, "Originally bought as a buliding block and marble run toy gift for my young daughters, Cuboro wound up fascinating me as much as it did them -- for its wonderful design and it's developmental and educational qualities -- and its ability to totally absorb one's attention for extended periods of time! -- and I wound up starting Oh! Toys to help promote Cuboro in the U.S." He is still on his mission to spread the joy of Cuboro!

My family has been fortunate enough to try out ourselves. It is really a great toy because it is fun for the whole family. You and the kids use individual wooden blocks to build a marble track. They have all kinds of shaped blocks where the marble can drop in and spin or run over or through the different blocks. Cuboro provides endless possibilities to build so every time you can create something completely new. I think it is really an educational toy because they have to think about and plan how the pieces can fit together. It is just as engaging for me and my husband and we often find ourselves competing for certain blocks and getting to place the next one we had in mind when we build together! It is also great in that as the kid grows older they can build more and more complex arrangements for all the pretty shiny marbles to run through. My daughter's first creation was quite simple and now they can get pretty big and sprawling!

Pepsi Refresh Project is giving away $1,300,000 each month to fund great ideas that will have a positive impact. My friends from Carl & Me - Exceptional Toys have an awesome idea to change America! They want to create Project Play, a family friendly cafe with healthy food and wooden toys! As a parent I can definitely say that is an idea that I would vote for and I wish there was something like that near me!

This grant will fund development of the guides and curriculum used to encourage play time whilst explaining engineering and mathematical fundamentals. Eventually, we hope the concept to become a franchised concept to be implemented across the USA.
