Child Organics Soapnuts and Soap Nut Concentrate Review and Giveaway

>> Thursday, March 4, 2010

I recently read about soap nuts and was very intrigued. I try to go green as much as possible but this was even better than I had hoped for. An actual natural plant with no additives cleans my clothes? Really?

So I did some research and found that Soap Nuts are the only true 100% Natural detergent and green cleaner. This sounds ideal I thought, but I have an HE washer... It turns out that they are ideal for both High Efficiency, front loaders and traditional top loaders!

So what are soap nuts exactly? They really are a deseeded fruit with natural detergent that comes out in the water when they get hydrated. Soap Nuts are extremely gentle, biodegradable, hypoallergenic, additive free, yet highly effective. They are low sudsing, eco-friendly, non-polluting and very affordable. They eliminate the need for fabric softeners and dryer sheets.

Are the soapnuts strong enough to wash cloth diapers? Yes! In fact, they are ideal for this because soapnuts do not have added oils that will "wick" diaper fabric fibers and reduce absorbency. They are also great for anyone with sensitive skin as they are hypoallergenic and unscented.

I tried out both the traditional soapnuts and an extreme 18X concentrate. Since I have two children still under 5, I was able to really put it to the test. It just so happened that the first load I needed to wash included some lovely throw-up and some pee-peed on training underwear. Both of my kids were happy to contribute to testing out the new detergent! I simply put 5 raw nuts in a drawstring bag, and tossed it in with my laundry. I put it on heavy duty and washed on cold. The clothes all came out without any scent what so ever! You can re-use the soapnuts 3-5 times. I was very pleased.

Next I tried the extreme concentrate. My son wanted to really put it to the test once again. I can't believe how this worked out but my second load of laundry was for Leo's bedsheets because he had a bloody nose at 3 in the morning! I threw them in the laundry with the soapnuts again on regular wash with cold water. In the morning when I checked the load, the blood was gone from his down pillow and his cotton blanket but there were still marks on his bed sheets. So this time, I applied the concentrate and rubbed it on the spots and washed again with warm water on express wash. It was spot free on removal! Both forms clearly work great and left clothes clean and scent free. On my next load, I added a few drops of lavender essential oil to the wash to get a gentle fragrance. I did not use fabric softener or dryer sheets. I am very excited to have found such a natural, green laundry detergent. You can check them out and buy some for your laundry here.
