Organic Palm Shortening from Tropical Traditions Review and Giveaway

>> Thursday, October 7, 2010

The thing I love about Tropical Traditions is that you can find so many things that are healthy for you and some of them I have never even tried! I just got the opportunity to try their organic palm shortening which I was immediately attracted to since it is Trans Fat Free Shortening!

Palm shortening is palm oil that has some of its unsaturated fats removed, giving it a very firm texture, and high melting point. The melting point of Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening is 97 degrees F., making it very shelf stable. It is NOT hydrogenised, and contains NO trans fats! It is great for deep-fat frying and baking, and is not prone to rancidity. Since it has been separated from some of the unsaturated portion of the oil, it is colorless and odorless, and will not affect the taste of foods like Virgin Palm Oil does.

As soon as we got our Organic Palm Shortening I set to work convincing my husband to make apple pie with me. He always makes the crust and I always make the filling. He usually uses butter for the crust but this time he replaced the butter with the organic palm shortening. He said it was just as easy to work with. The pie crust came out great nicely browned and yummy! I am very pleased with the organic palm shortening's ability to substitute for butter in cooking. Tropical Traditions also has a ton of recipes you can use the palm shortening in. One that looked particularly yummy to me is Toasted Coconut Ginger Blondies. I am also really excited to have him try the palm shortening to make fried chicken fingers with since it is trans fat free!
