Gardening with My Kids

>> Friday, May 21, 2010

We planted a smallish garden about a month ago. My kids love it! They loved digging up the dirt and playing with the worms and my daughter did a great job pulling up the weeds and placing the brick border. At five, my daughter is into helping with every little step, my son, at three, is more interested in just playing with the worms and transporting the bricks!

We planted a bunch of tomatoes, my favorite! We also planted summer squash and zucchini. My daughter planted a "runaway squash seed" she got from a friend and everything is doing really well so far. My husband planted a ton of spicy peppers (his favorite) from seeds and they are still small but coming along.

The problem we have so far is that something keeps eating all my summer squash and zucchini blossoms. Last year I thought it was the deer but it could be the bunnies, armadillo, or squirrels. We have a wildlife park back there. I have even seen a wild turkey in my yard!

We also have blueberries we planted last year. The blueberries are looking great though still green. We have strawberries came back from the ones we planted last year too but they are consistently small and an animal or my daughter always get them before I get a bite!

I love gardening even though ours is tiny!

Here is another fun post about gardening with kids that I found over at Woven by Words.

We started a garden for the first time here and at my grandparents. The one here is on our patio and the ones at my grandparents house are surrounded by wire fences because there's lots of wildlife that would happily eat all our plants if the fences weren't up! Hope you get to try some of your strawberries! ;)

It's always fun getting dirty with the kids. Our strawberries are turning red. Doubt if we get a chance to eat them before the birds get them.

My family loves to garden. When we moved into our new home we were able to double our garden space. My kids have also doubled their veggie consumption, because they take pride in having grown it themselves! It is so much fun!

My kids eat things out of the garden and in fact some things never get in the house because they eat them outside.

My hubby loves to garden and grow fruits and vegetables. we have hot peppers, squash, cabbage that chunky brought home from school, cucumbers, watermelon and pumpkins oh and rattle snake beans. the hubby loves to grow plants. we probably wont eat any of it cause we rarely eat what he grows.

Tomatoes are my favorite, too! I know I need to do zuccini and pumpkin, but as usual, I'm too late. Maybe I can find them already grown somewhere!! Our June bearing strawberries are keeping us very happy.

Gardening is so much fun!
