Record Flood in Nashville

>> Tuesday, May 4, 2010

So if you have been wondering where I have been for the last two days, the answer is with out electricity and internet! Nashville received torrential downpour and the the results are really hard to believe! There are just way too many strange weather patterns going on. Anyone else notice this?

According to FOX News, "Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen called it an "unprecedented rain event," but that failed to capture the magnitude. More than 13 inches of rain fell in Nashville over two days, nearly doubling the previous record of 6.68 inches that fell in the wake of Hurricane Fredrick in 1979...Five people have died in Nashville where on Sunday authorities found two people who drowned in a home and two others who died when their vehicle overturned in flood waters."

Sunday morning our electricity and cable went out and it just came back on this morning (Tuesday morning.) On Sunday, we ventured out to our very nearby Publix to discover, that while it was still open, the highway running by it was underwater as well as half the parking lot! The Publix was being emptied out by all that could make it there.

My observations:
Wow, am I thankful that we were not stranded in our house, or evacuated. We also seemed to have missed out on the flooded basement that many our neighbors experienced. Again, I am VERY THANKFUL!

It felt very odd to be stranded and cut off as they closed the interstate for 70 miles and almost all of the roads out were blocked by flood water.

I had a glimpse into what life must have been like without electricity, computers, and TV. Though it was hard to overcome my withdrawal symptoms, checking the clock (electric), flipping the bathroom light switch, wanting to check my email, the list goes on, I also noticed something! There was so much life outside. Neighbors chitchatting in driveways, kids out and about, people taking walks. So many active people. Hmmm. It was kind of nice in some ways. But I am right back to the computer with over 500 emails to sort through!

I'm just glad that you are safe!

I know the feeling about not having any electricity, and when our phone goes out so does the cable and the internet (all the same company and running on the same line.)

Just stay safe and welcome back!

Glad that you made it thru w/out being too adversely effected. And it is neat to lose power and see how everyone goes outside. Happens in our neighborhood too and I really enjoy that aspect of it!

Glad you are safe and didn't have to evacuate. I live in Cookeville and it was scary here. I have one college classmate who had decided to go home for the weekend (to Franklin) and got stuck there. Another whose parents live near Waverly are without water and had friends who had to evacuate. My boyfriend's youngest son attends the Art Institute in Nashville and said where he lives part of the highway is gone.

I am glad all is well with you and yours. Perhaps there is a generator company out there that would like you to demo and post about their product?

It is totally disorientating and frightening when natural disasters like that hit close to home. Glad to hear you are all safe and OK and did not have to evacuate and your home is not flooded.

The weather is so crazy. Didn't realize it had flooded so badly there! We had record Hi-s here in MN in March. Now it's freezing in May and we may see snow tomorrow. Not kidding. What's going on here?
