JumpStart 3D Virtual World- Adventure Based Learning for Kids and Membership Giveaway
>> Friday, February 5, 2010
"JumpStart is an award-winning adventure-based 3D virtual world that is super-personalized, wildly imaginative and really fun, but don't let that fool you - it also teaches math, reading, and critical thinking skills so kids get a real jump start in life." When I first read this, the idea blew my mind a little bit! A virtual world for kids! My daughter is almost 5 and will be starting Kindergarten next year so I thought it might be cool to check out and see what it is all about.
JumpStart is really a virtual world with a great map of different areas for them to explore. Each area has tons of games, lessons, and adventures. It seems that there is no end to the exploration, discovery and learning because they have 1000s of games and lessons and constantly adding new things to the virtual world. By blending interactive adventures and award-winning learning games into a online world that your child can control and take at his or her own pace, JumpStart inspires learning and self-confidence in a fun way.
I liked that the skills my daughter is learning correlate to classroom learning
based on national educational standards and JumpStart has won tons of awards. My daughter really enjoyed creating her avatar and dressing her just so and even picking out the eyes and skin color. We began exploring in StoryLand which is aimed at 3-5 year olds. This area has lots of games that seem to familiarize them with using computers and concepts about how computers work that many adults never learned till college! She really loved the artwork area and created masterpiece (never humble about my kids) after masterpiece with all of the different paint options such as spray, brush, and textured solid blocks of color. She also liked adopting a pet and grooming it. She grew really attached to it and keeps asking if it will come with her on her adventures, (which it usually does and always returns to her if it can't come with her). The issue with my daughter is not getting her to play, it's getting her to stop!
For children in kindergarten to 2nd grade, there is AdventureLand and the recently released MarineLand, an underwater adventure. They also just launched another area called FutureLand for kids from 3rd to 5th grade. They are always adding new stuff and are doing a special scavenger hunt for Valentine's day with hearts hidden around the virtual world!

I'm an instructional technologist, so I enjoy exploring educational programs. After viewing the introduction, my three-year-old daughter is excited to try out this new virtual world to create her own character, room, and even pet. I noticed that they have received several awards, including a "National Parenting Seal of Approval" and an "iParenting Media Award". Thank you.
